At Home Practice for your FLY Kid
October 27 – 31, 2014 : Halloween Party!
Intention: Shape Shifting
What does it mean to put on someone/ something else’s skin? This time of year is filled with costumes, and play pretend… but why do we choose to pretend the way we do? Silliness? Fun? Sure! But, today let’s look at some of the reasons we want to slip into someone else’s skin. What qualities do your favorite characters and archetypes bring out in You? What superpowers? What stories? Today we’ll play slipping in and out of our Yoga poses as if they were costumes, and see where we can look in ourselves for our beauty, strength, silliness, and superness!
ARTS Immersion: Party Quirks
An all time favorite in the FLY Acts! Curriculum. Today, we will explore how to communicate our “characters” without saying what they are directly. We will through an “imaginary” costume party and try to guess who every character in attendance is. Guests are only allowed to say one phrase, one pose, and the rest must be communicated through body movements and emotions. Get ready for some silly and physical character play!
Jack O’ Lantern
Don’t fear from the picture! We have a fun and playful variation for your kids to get their silly jack o’lanterns carved and open their hip flexibility! We’ll begin lying down on our backs and bringing the soles of our feet to touch. With knees pointed out to the sides, do a belly crunch to peek through the space between your legs. Maybe your heels will rest on your forehead or the top of your head like a pumpkin stem. Super bendy FLYers may squiqqle a foot behind their head! Now, can you be a Happy Faced Jack O’Lantern? A Surprised one? A Scary one? Play with all the many faces you can carve 🙂
Start in Butterfly with the soles of your feet together and your knees open to the sides. Take hold of your big toes with your “peace fingers” and practice balancing on your sits bones. Slowly and gently straighten one leg, then maybe the other. Work to get both legs straight. Use your belly strength to sit up tall and keep from rolling backwards! Try flying like a bat by opening and closing your legs. To turn back into a spooky vampire, release your toes and cross one leg over the other. Wrap your arms over your chest like a cape and Muah hahahaha- you are a spoooky vampire. Turn back into a bat and fly away!!!
FLY YOGA BABY ASANA
Baby Bat
Place Baby on his or her back with feet toward you. Gently take hold of ankle or calves and open Baby’s legs wide in an inner thigh stretch then squeeze both legs back together. This helps build flexibility in the hip joints and muscles to help with crawling and walking. Sing, “Open Shut Them, Open Shut Them,” as you repeat 5-6 times.
BREATH OF THE WEEK
Happy Ghost Breath
Standing tall with arms by your sides and feet wide apart. Take a deep breath in and reach your arms to the sky, stretching both sides. Slowly drop one arm into a full side stretch as you exhale. Reach both arms up to center as you inhale. Switch sides on your exhale. Keep your breath moving as you sway side to side. On your out breaths begin adding the a silly and spooky ghost OOOOOOM
